On Monday, as the girls cleaned up from a bake sale at a pool in Pickerington, they realized that someone had stolen a cash box containing $300.
"We were all crying because we were really looking forward to giving it to the hospital," said Brynn Schmidt. "It's just sad that someone would take that."
Schmidt, her best friend, Carlie Howard, and Schmidt's younger sister, Maddie, held garage sales, lemonade stands and car washes to raise money for the Hematology-Oncology Clinic at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Brynn Schmidt was treated at the clinic when she was younger.
"Since they did so much for me I just wanted to give back to them and say thank you," she said.
This week, after the public became aware of the theft, members of the community stepped in to help, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.
Among them was Denny Walker, with Tri-County Chrysler Dodge-Jeep, who decided to replace the lost money.
"We just didn't feel that they should be punished for the deeds of one person," Walker said.
He was not alone.
Strangers touched by the girls' acts kicked in for the cause as well. On Friday, the trio learned that nearly $2,000 was donated, McEntyre reported.
"I think it's just amazing that we have that much money and all the kids will get that," said Maddie Schmidt.
The money will help pay for toys and video games to ease the discomfort of children fighting cancer and blood disorders.
"I thank the community for supporting those young girls, supporting us as a hospital, but mostly for supporting the positive efforts of those kids," said Paula Sanborn, a nurse at the Hematology/Oncology Clinic at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
